Caring across borders: Supporting a patient’s final journey

Background

An elderly man became seriously ill while on a cruise and was assessed in the ship’s medical centre. He was taken ashore to a Caribbean hospital, where doctors diagnosed influenza A, complicated by suspected pulmonary embolism, tachyarrhythmia and signs of heart failure. His pre-existing conditions made him vulnerable to chest infections, and despite treatment, his health declined and he passed away peacefully.

Challenge

Managing a sudden death abroad meant balancing urgent logistics with sensitive, round-the-clock support for the family.

The case was emotionally and time sensitive, with next of kin travelling alongside the patient and other family members back in the UK.

Healix needed to provide clear communication, regular updates and emotional support.

After the patient’s death, we had to confirm the cause, arrange repatriation, and ensure all cultural, religious and legal requirements were met – all while liaising with insurers and local authorities.

Approach

We acted quickly and compassionately to coordinate care, communication and repatriation.

Healix referred the case to the underwriting team to assess coverage and kept in close contact with the patient’s family.

We worked with consular services to meet legal requirements and secure documentation.

Our appointed international funeral directors managed logistics and maintained regular contact with the family. We also arranged flights for the next of kin and ensured the patient’s belongings were returned.

Outcome

The patient was repatriated to the UK for burial, in line with his family’s wishes.

Despite the emotional and logistical challenges, the case was handled with compassion, clarity and professionalism.

The family were supported throughout, and all arrangements were completed smoothly and respectfully.
