On the morning of 26 August, the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi rivers overflowed, which triggered a series of flash floods in northern Nepal and a mudslide in Tibet.
The most severe impacts have been reported in Nepal's Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts and Tibet's Gyirong County. Extensive damage to roads, bridges and utilities infrastructure has disrupted transport networks, hampered rescue operations and displaced local communities across the affected area.
As of 08h45 UTC 28 August, the Nepalese authorities have reported at least 489 fatalities and more than 900 missing. Chinese state media reported five fatalities in Gyirong County, while at least 558 people remained unaccounted for. Hundreds of foreign nationals are also reportedly missing. Military and civilian aviation assets have been mobilised, and medical teams have been deployed as search-and-rescue operations continue. According to Nepal’s national disaster agency, more than 350 people have been rescued.
Preliminary assessments have indicated that the incident was likely triggered by the collapse of a glacier, rather than an earthquake, as initially reported. Nepalese authorities had earlier assessed that an earthquake-induced landslide caused the flooding; however, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) subsequently assessed that the recorded seismic activity was generated by the landslide itself. Emerging satellite imagery and expert analysis further support the theory that a glacial or rock-ice collapse triggered the flooding.
Flash flood warnings and evacuation orders have been issued for communities in Central Nepal, including the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan, amid concerns over further flooding and associated landslides.
The wider risk picture
The floods underscore the significant natural disaster risks that exist across the Nepal-Tibet corridor where narrow river valleys and limited transport redundancies can rapidly transform a localised incident into a major regional disruption.
The incident also draws attention to the growing threat posed by glacial hazards in the Himalayas, particularly glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). These events occur when large volumes of water are suddenly released from glacial lakes, often resulting in severe downstream flooding and damage to infrastructure. Rising temperatures due to climate change and glacier retreat have increased concerns over the frequency and severity of such hazards across the Himalayas.
It also further highlights the elevated operational risk environment and the vulnerability of critical infrastructure. Road networks, border crossings and hydropower facilities are concentrated along river corridors, which mean a single flood or landslide can disrupt mobility, communications and access to essential services across a wide geographic area. Such disruptions can delay emergency response efforts and leave travellers isolated in affected areas.
What to expect next
Severe operational disruption is almost certain to persist across affected areas in the coming weeks, particularly across road transport, utilities and telecommunications networks. Access to the Gyirong-Rasuwagadhi border crossing and parts of Rasuwa District is likely to remain constrained as authorities prioritise emergency response, search-and-rescue and infrastructure recovery efforts, and it remains unclear when full road access will be restored.
The most significant downstream impacts are likely to remain concentrated along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors, where communities, transport infrastructure and critical services have sustained the greatest damage. Supply shortages and reduced access to essential goods and services are likely in the near term, particularly in isolated communities.
Chinese authorities have also increased monitoring of an upstream barrier lake near the Nepal-Tibet border, which is reportedly already overflowing and could contribute to further downstream flooding if water levels continue to rise. As floodwaters move through regional river systems, impacts may extend into northern India, raising the potential for cross-border disruption and additional humanitarian and infrastructure challenges.
While conditions are expected to gradually improve as recovery operations progress, the risk of secondary disruptions, including further flooding, landslides and infrastructure failures, is likely to remain elevated until damaged transport and utilities networks are stabilised.
While Kathmandu is situated outside the immediate path of any secondary flooding along the Trishuli River system, the city is likely to experience indirect impacts from the disaster. Medical facilities are highly likely to face increased patient intake from affected districts, placing additional pressure on healthcare resources in the near term. Kathmandu is also likely to serve as the principal hub for coordinating relief, recovery and humanitarian assistance efforts over the coming days. Notably, Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) is currently operational and serves as a critical gateway for emergency response activities.

Given the concentration of infrastructure along vulnerable river corridors, organisations should also be prepared for prolonged transport disruptions, last-minute itinerary changes and difficulties accessing or evacuating personnel from affected areas.
