Life-saving cardiac care in the US - and major cost savings

Background

A 70-year-old tour manager for a major travel operator suffered a life-threatening aortic dissection while leading a tour in Salt Lake City, USA.

They were airlifted to hospital for emergency cardiac surgery. The travel operator alerted Healix, who immediately stepped in to coordinate urgent medical care and ensure the client received the support they needed.

Challenge

Navigating a complex case while containing costs.

Given the initial complexity of the case and the expectation from the get-go of high costs, our local agent in the USA was immediately appointed.

Our medical and operations teams stayed on top of the situation, ensuring that the patient’s husband, back in the UK, was kept informed. The client was also made aware of the increasing costs and medical treatment received by the patient.

Outcome

Cost savings of US$492,000 achieved.

While the medical side of the case was expertly managed by the medical and operations team at Healix, it was clear that costs for this case would be high, given the complexity of the treatment and its length. The use of a thoroughly selected local agent allowed Healix to contain the costs as well as negotiating discounts applicable on the final bills. In the end, a cost saving of almost half a million USD ($492,000) was obtained.
