Medical evacuation to Luxembourg - saving a limb in 72 hours
Healix received an urgent call from a client whose wife had been hit by a car in Kyrgyzstan and admitted to hospital. Both were Luxembourg nationals. The patient was suspected to have a broken leg, but her husband was concerned about the quality of care available locally.
Challenge
Our team quickly confirmed the severity: a comminuted open tibia and fibula fracture with gross contamination. This was a limb-threatening injury requiring immediate debridement and lavage. Local treatment options were limited, and urgent evacuation was the safest course.
Approach
The case was escalated to senior coordinators and medical staff. Using a Russian-speaking coordinator, we liaised with the treating doctor and explained the situation to the patient’s husband. Healix secured quotes and availability from air ambulance operators in Western Europe, Turkey and the UAE. A Luxembourg-based air ambulance was pre-positioned overnight, enabling evacuation the day after the accident. We also arranged tickets for the husband via Istanbul to Luxembourg.
Outcome
The patient was flown to her home city and admitted to hospital in Luxembourg, where definitive surgery was performed within 72 hours of the accident. Healix’s rapid response and global network ensured limb-saving treatment and peace of mind for the family.
