Healix International hosts cost containment roundtable

11.03.2025
5th March 2025
On 5 March, Healix International hosted a breakfast meeting at The Ivy City Garden in London.

The event, titled ‘Effective cost containment in healthcare: Balancing quality of care with cost control’ brought together Claims Managers and Accident and Health Specialists at insurers and underwriters.

We were also delighted to be joined by three external speakers who shared their perspectives: Mary-Jo McDonald, Managing Director Europe at Global Excel, David Cléro, Network and Quality Manager at the International Assistance Group and Dana Levy, VP of Account Management and Growth from Air Doctor.

Over breakfast, the attendees discussed:

  • The current trends and challenges in healthcare cost containment
  • Why transparent and cost-effective care is so important
  • Balancing patients’ medical needs against insurance coverage
  • The impact of rising healthcare costs on patients and healthcare providers
  • The challenges of identifying and eliminate wasteful expenditures
  • The role of telemedicine and digital health in reducing or containing costs

During the meeting, our group discussed the benefits of repatriating patients for treatment in their home country as familiar surroundings and the support of loved ones can aid recovery. There was also a focus on how different regions are expanding their healthcare options, with more hubs and centres of excellence offering greater choice for those who fall ill abroad.

Overall, the discussion made one thing clear: cost efficiency and patient care don’t have to be at odds. Collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and innovative care models are key to achieving both.

What is cost containment and why is it so important?

Cost containment in healthcare is literally the action or fact of containing, holding or restraining of medical costs without sacrificing on patient quality of care.

At Healix International, we work with a number of insurance clients as their chosen emergency assistance provider for their policy holders.

However, receiving healthcare treatment, especially in an emergency, can be expensive. Good quality care, facilitated in safe and well-equipped environments, costs time and money, and these costs can soon escalate. This is especially true when patients are receiving care away from home, for example on a business trip or on holiday.

At Healix International, we assess treatment in line with patients’ medical needs and insurance cover, avoiding any unnecessarily inflated expenses in the process.
