Halving medical bills in USA

Background

Healix received notification from the insurer that a 56 year old male patient had fallen ill and had been admitted to hospital. The patient had suffered heart failure (ischaemic cardiomyopathy secondary to heart attack) and had received emergency surgery in San Francisco, California in the USA. Further surgeries were scheduled due to the severity of the situation.

We immediately acted and started managing the case.

Challenge

A lengthy and complex case led to high expected costs.

The Healix medical and operations team were involved with the case from the beginning. The relatives of the patient were informed, and a corresponding agent was appointed to manage the costs.

High costs were expected due to the complexity of the case and the length of the treatment. An immediate action was to appoint the preferred local agent to contain costs and obtain further reductions.

Outcome

Cost savings of US$1,011,000 achieved.

The final medical costs initially amounted to over two million US$. Using cost containment strategies, Healix managed to obtain excellent discounts on the medical bills, including reducing one of the largest invoices by 47%, resulting in a cost saving of over one million US$.
