Level 3 alert issued for Hurricane Beryl

04.07.2024

The passage of Hurricane Beryl through the Caribbean has resulted in at least eight deaths and significant damage.

While Beryl is continuing to weaken on its westward path towards Mexico, residual disruption in the Caribbean is almost certain over the coming days. Airport closures due to the hurricane are disrupting travel in the region.

Hurricane Beryl is moving in a westerly direction and is scheduled to pass to the south of the Cayman Islands in the morning hours (local time) before moving further west towards Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. It is currently a Category 3 hurricane.

Beryl caused at least one fatality and significant damage in Jamaica on 3 July. It passed to the south of the island country as a Category 4 hurricane.

Several international airports in the Caribbean, including in Jamaica, remain closed until further notice owing to the passage of Beryl.

Major disruption likely

Beryl is expected to cause moderate damage in the Cayman Islands, having weakened to a Category 3 storm. It will likely weaken further by the time it reaches the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

Further heavy rainfall and strong winds are liable to cause significant infrastructural damage and flooding over the coming 24 - 48 hours in the affected region.

Major disruption is almost certain to persist in the coming days, with residual disruption almost certain over at least the coming week.
